On January 1, 2020 new regulations from the International Marine Organization (IMO) will reduce the maximum sulfur content of marine fuels from 3.5% to 0.5%. Exactly how the marine industry will respond to these regulations is unknown, but global demand for middle distillate / diesel supply is expected to rise by 2-3 million barrels per day.
The 2020 deadline was recently confirmed at the 70th session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee.
